  • An investigation has been launched after a police officer was found drunk in a state vehicle.
  • The officer allegedly used the vehicle without permission to travel from Gauteng to Limpopo.
  • The police officer, who is stationed at Alexandra police station, will also face disciplinary action.

Gauteng police are probing an incident in which a police officer allegedly used a state vehicle to travel to a different province without authorisation. The officer was later found drunk inside the vehicle.

The officer, who is stationed at Alexandra police station in Johannesburg, was "found intoxicated" in the marked state vehicle on Sunday. He had travelled to Limpopo in the vehicle, said police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello.

Sello added:

Preliminary investigations revealed that the member utilised the police station's vehicle without authority to travel to another province. The 36-year-old sergeant was arrested in Masemola in Limpopo.

Sello said a case of use of a motor vehicle without the owner's consent had been opened and that an internal disciplinary case was also under investigation.

"The management of SAPS in Gauteng province has condemned in the strongest possible terms the incident whereby a member of Alexandra police station was found intoxicated inside a marked state vehicle," said Sello.

"No member of the service will be allowed to misuse or abuse state resources which are meant to serve the public.

"Members of the public are urged to report any misuse of state resources and misconduct by police officials at any police station, at the Gauteng Complaints Service Centre on 082 442 2000, or the National Service Complaints Call Centre on 0800 333 177," Sello added.
