4-year-old Shivaji at Nahargarh Biological Park on Tuesday
JAIPUR: Under an exchange programme, the state forest department on Tuesday brought male tiger 'Shivaji' from Gwalior.
The 4-year-old big cat covered approximately 400km to reach its new adobe.
A senior official said, "The big cat was brought by road. While returning, the team was extra cautious and took several halts (after two hours) to monitor the tiger's health. To avoid illness due to change in water, arrangement of mineral water has also been done by the department".
The big cat will pair with a tigress, which was shifted to Jaipur earlier from Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha. This has taken the tally of tigers in Nahargarh Biological Park to six. An official said, "In return, the state has given a pair of wolves, Indian foxes, and leopards to Madhya Pradesh".
Lately, Nahargarh Biological Park had become infamous for deaths of big cats.
An official said that now the forest department monitor the movement of tigers on the CCTV cameras installed in cages at Jaipur's Nahargarh Biological Park. This was recommended by experts from Punjab's Chhatbir Zoo.
The experts were called to Jaipur after the authorities were unable to understand the cause of the death of big cats at the park. A total 10 big cats have died at the park due to leptospirosis.
