The heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has increased the water stock in all the seven lakes from 9 per cent to 16 per cent. The lakes have accumulated 2,32,744 million litres of their total capacity--14,47,363 million litres. So, the city now has a water supply of 61 days. In the last ten days, the lake levels have risen by 7 per cent following incessant downpour.

Owing to the steadily rising level of lakes, a delegation of the BJP leaders met BMC administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal and demanded to withdraw the 10 per cent water cut imposed in the city since June 27.

“Since the water stock is increasing the BMC should withdraw water cuts as the citizens are facing acute water shortage,” said BJP group leader in the BMC Prabhakar Shinde. The delegation alleged that even if the water cut is said to be 10 per cent but the actual cut faced by the citizens is up to 30 percent.

However, the civic official said that this is not the right time to roll back the water cut. “Looking at the present situation of stock in the lakes, water cuts should not be withdrawn so early. The civic body will soon take a review of stock in all the lakes and will then decide about withdrawing the cut,” the official asserted.
