Government College of Dentistry, the state’s only government dental college, is required to submit compliance reports to Dental Council of India (DCI) for the fourth consecutive year on shortage of equipment, PG-UU area, and NAAC certification for retaining nine post graduate seats in three courses.
The college had received permission to start PG courses in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Public Health Dentistry, and Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics from union ministry of health and family welfare and officials of DCI had inspected the college to assess whether to continue permission for 2023-2024 session.
During the executive committee meeting held on June 23, the DCI has raised the issue of discrepancies in the college it found after inspection of peer committee on May 26-27.
After receiving reports of these inspectors, the DCI sought compliance report from college administration to decide whether to continue permission of seats.
The lacunas found during inspection included shortage of e-library subscription, library of national and international journals, teaching staff pattern is not as per requirements, leave application of the many staff not furnished, and the UG and PG area requirement is not as per guideline.
The peer teams of Dental Council had also mentioned about lack of NAAC certification, operating microscopes 3 step or 5 step magnification, equipments for casting procedures, Laser, and face bow with semi adjustable articulator.
However, Dental College principal Dr Deshraj Jain said problems have been addressed and the report will be submitted soon. “We have taken steps, ordering for the e-journals lot. We will soon get the journals while construction of the new building has been started. We have adequate strength of professors and staff as per DCI requirement. I hope we will not face any problem in receiving approval for retaining seats,” Dr Jain added.
