Man asks for dowry, gives triple talaq to wife; arrested

Greater Noida: Police on Monday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly demanding dowry and divorcing his wife through the banned triple talaq practice in the Jarcha area of Greater Noida. The couple, said police, were undergoing mediation in a bid for reconciliation, but it failed, and they made the arrest after that.
According to police, the accused, Shamsher, employed with a private company and a resident of Usmanpur village in the Dankaur area, married the complainant, Shanu, in 2020. “On June 10, his wife, Shanu, reached the Jarcha police station and alleged that her family had given her several valuables as dowry, but the man and his family often harassed and assaulted her for more dowry. The husband also demanded a bike from her parents, and she was harassed and assaulted on this account," said Shripal, station officer, Jarcha police station, Greater Noida.
In the complaint, the woman said that her husband came to meet her at her parents' house on May 19 this year and divorced her by pronouncing triple talaq. He also allegedly threatened to kill her if she tried to file a complaint against him. “We registered a case against Shamsher for demanding dowry, abusing, beating and threatening to kill his wife. Our team arrested him from the Haldoni turn in Greater Noida on Monday. After the complaint, the two had undertaken mediation in a bid for reconciliation. Our team took action after the mediation talks failed. Further investigation is underway,” Shripal said.
Apart from Shamsher, the FIR names his mother, three sisters and an elder sister-in-law as accused, but the others have not been arrested yet. Further arrests would be made soon, the officer said.
The accused have been booked under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, and other provisions of IPC. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 declares instant divorce granted by the pronouncement of talaq three times as void and illegal.
