Mumbai: Two persons have been booked for attempting to break in the ATM kiosk of a nationalised bank and steal money from it. The crime, reported from Virar, came to fore when a customer informed the bank officials that the ATM machine was not dispensing money.

When some of the bank officials inspected the machine, they found that the cash dispenser unit was loose and informed senior officials about the same. Next day, when a technician inspected the machine, he told officials that someone had tried to tamper with the cash dispenser, the police said.

The bank officials then checked the footage of the CCTV installed inside the ATM kiosk. They saw that, on June 28, a man was trying to tamper with the machine, probably with an intention to commit theft, while his accomplice was keeping a watch outside.

The duo left when some customers came to withdraw cash. The footage further revealed that the duo had visited multiple times on the same day, and tried to tamper with the machine. The bank then lodged a complaint with the police in this regard after which an FIR was registered on Saturday.

Based on the bank manager's complaint, the police have registered a case on charges of common intention, theft and attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment.
