GURUGRAM: To make commuting by cycle easier, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is working towards building a cycle track network in areas like MG Road, Golf Course Road, Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), and Gurugram-Faridabad road.
According to officials, the cycle track project, which is in the later stages of paperwork, is a 15km track between IFFCO Chowk and SPR. The tender allotment is in process. “This track is part of a larger cycle track network we are planning for Gurugram. Our goal is to ensure areas to the left of that track, such as Golf Course road, Gurugram-Faridabad road, SPR, as well as the roads connecting these like St. Thomas Marg and Hamilton Court road, are equipped with cycle tracks,” said a senior GMDA official.
Cycle tracks have already been approved along some of the stretches, including MG Road and SPR. While the track in MG Road is part of a larger project of converting a 2.5km stretch between Sikanderpur and IFFCO Chowk into a model road, the track at SPR is part of the upgradation work that includes the construction of eight flyovers in the 12km stretch. In addition to these, officials said that a third track will be constructed by DLF between Genpact Chowk and Faridabad road.
“We aim to extend the track from Genpact Chowk to Gwal Pahari. At present, however, in the first phase, DLF will be constructing a 900-metre-long track from Genpact Chowk to Faridabad road,” said the official.
“DLF will construct a cycle track along Golf Course Road too. The final goal is to create a cycle track network or a loop covering this entire portion of the city. However, completing this whole project will take a few years. We are hopeful that this entire network can be created by 2025,” added the official.
The tracks will cover busier areas, housing several upscale condominiums, gated societies, commercial spaces, malls, and offices. Residents lauded this long-term plan but are concerned about the ability of the authority to ensure it translates on the ground.
“These areas are busy stretches and have a high number of people travelling on cycle. The absence of any demarcated space makes them move alongside the cars, which is unsafe. Such projects only make sense if they materialise on the ground, and GMDA doesn’t have the greatest track record with this. Officials should make sure that they expedite the work,” said Nitin Sharma, a resident of Sector 43.
