Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A traffic awareness workshop was organised by the traffic police for drivers and operators of school buses of various schools at Labhmandapam Auditorium, Abhay Prashal, on Sunday. More than 1,500 drivers and conductors of various educational institutions were present at this workshop.

Addressing the people, commissioner of police Harinarayanachari Mishra said the purpose of this programme was very broad. Road accidents are the biggest reason that claims the lives of many people all over the world. India has the highest percentage of road accidents in the world. In such a situation, our challenges and responsibility increase even more. The entire city shakes if a road accident related to schoolchildren occurs. There was a school bus accident in the city which shook the entire city. A slight carelessness on the part of the driver or conductor puts the lives of all the people in the vehicle—along with theirs—in danger.

Mishra said, “Our awareness level about road safety rules should be very high. The driver of a vehicle has to be more careful about his health. School managements must conduct health and eye tests of bus drivers and conductors because, in many road accidents, night blindness and lack of mental health have become the cause.

“The school management should install cameras inside the buses, as well as front and rear, so that, if there’s an accident due to any other reason, the main cause of the accident can be known and legal action can be taken against the errant person,” Mishra added.

Additional CP (Security and Law and Order) Manish Kapooria said that one’s behaviour on the road is a mirror of one’s personality; it shows how one’s mind works. Addressing the bus drivers and conductors, he said that driving big vehicles means an important responsibility on one’s shoulders.

Additional CP (Crime/Headquarters) Rajesh Hingankar said school bus drivers and conductors should set an example in the whole country as far as discipline goes.

DCP (Traffic Management) Mahesh Chand Jain suggested that bus drivers and conductors do their work in a confident and better way and also informed the bus drivers about the precautions to be taken to run a bus safely.
