A 16-year-old boy studying in Std 10th of a Dahanu school on Saturday evening mowed down two conservancy staff of the Dahanu civic council, killing them on the spot.
The boy was driving his father's white Ford Aspire SUV-MH48AC8771- and lost control and mowed down Vankesh Manji Zop (38), a resident of Chinbave Bamanpada and Bharat Kanji Raut (55), a resident of Agar in Dahanu.
The two victims were employed in the conservancy department of the Dahanu civic council and were draining rainwater from a manhole when the accused, lost control and collided with the victims and later also broke a portion of a wall. The locals rushed the duo to the nearby Cottage Hospital but were declared dead before admission.
"The accused had taken the car and was driving at high speed as the road was empty. He lost control and mowed down the two victims," said Sr PI Namdev Bandgar of Dahanu police station.
"We have arrested the boy under the strict Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and other sections of the Motor Vehicle Act," said the official.
"We will produce the accused before the Bhiwandi court on Monday and he will be remanded to the Children's Remand Home. We will also make the owner of the car co-accused as he had given the keys to the teenager to drive the car and are investigating further," said Bandgar.
If convicted, the accused could face a 10-year jail term as the case is triable by the Sessions court.
