Bhopal(Madhya pradesh): Contaminated water, poor sanitation and bad roads sans street lights in ward no. 34 have now become the key issues in the upcoming civic polls. Impure drinking water supply, poor state of drainage infrastructure in Jhanda Colony is posing health issues in the area. Water logging during rains in the area adds to the woes of the residents. Broken roads, lack of street lights in the area are also posing grave risks to commuters.  The drains in the area are open and remain clogged throughout the year but things become deplorable during rains, said residents.

“We suffer a lot due to impure drinking water. Various waterborne diseases have become a common trait for us. There had been incidents in which worms were found in the tap water,” said a resident Raja Mia.

“Bad state of roads and poor sanitation has now become synonymous with Jhada colony. Last elected Councilor had neglected the area after winning the elections. No development has taken place in this area and people's sufferings have increased,” said Rizwan, a localite.

Residents also expressed concern about irregular garbage collection in the area. The garbage collection vehicle comes to the colony twice or thrice in a month, and the people mostly discard their wastes in the open thus leading to piling and decaying of waste. Incidents of snakes making their way into houses are common occurrences.

Area resident Salman said that people in the area are deprived of a basic necessity like clean water and proper sanitation. "Water being supplied to the area is not clean and a number of residents have been facing fungal infection and other water-borne health issues in our locality."

A senior citizen Tehzib complained about the bad roads. "We have to suffer a lot due to broken roads. Walking on dilapidated roads in absence of any street lights becomes difficult for elderly people like me," said Tahzib. The previous corporator had said that a tender for the road construction was passed, however, there is no development in this regard.

One of the civic body polls candidates contesting from the area, Md Asif, said, “There are many issues in the area but we will work at ground level and ensure the residents get the basic amenities”.
