HYDERABAD: The beheading of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur found a special mention during the proceedings on the first day of the BJP national executive meeting here as the party paid homage to the tailor who was killed by two Muslim youths for supporting suspended BJP member Nupur Sharma in a social media post.
Other than Kanhaiya, Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, who was killed recently, too found a mention in a condolence message passed at the meeting. “Kanhaiya Lal was brutally killed by anti-national forces in Udaipur. The party conveys deep condolences to his family,” said the condolence message, which was read out by BJP general secretary Dilip Saikia in the presence of top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The message also mentioned several others, including noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (popularly known as KK) who died of cardiac arrest in Kolkata recently and the army personnel who were killed in a landslide in Manipur.
Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death by two men who posted videos online claiming they were avenging an insult to Islam. Days before his killing, the tailor had told police that he had received threats for a social media post shared from his account, apparently supporting Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, also known as Sidhu Moosewala, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29, a day after the Punjab government prunned the security cover of the singer and 423 people temporarily.
BJP is likely to make two important political statements on Sunday.
The beheading of the Udaipur tailor might find a mention in the political resolution. It will also expected to make a special statement on the political situation in Telangana.
Union home minister Amit Shah, who is considered to have played a key role in formation of the government in Maharashtra by Shiv Sena rebels and BJP, will move the political resolution which is to be endorsed by Karnataka chief minister Basvaraj Bommai and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma. This is the first time that Shah will be moving the political resolution, which will bring out the party’s take on the current social and political atmosphere and also the roadmap for its future course of action.
Speaking to reporters earlier, former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia had dropped enough hints on the resolution containing the Udaipur incident when she said the resolution will refer to the latest developments in the country.
There was, however, no clarity on what the statement on Telangana will contain. Sources added that there will be a discussion on Telangana on Sunday after which the statement will be made public. The national executive was planned in Hyderabad to make a frontal attack on TRS just ahead of the assembly polls in 2023.
