NOIDA: A suspected leopard cub was spotted in the AVJ Heights society on Thursday night in Sector Zeta 1 in Greater Noida. A resident captured the animal on a mobile phone, and the video went viral on social media.
Soon, a team from the district forest department reached the spot, but the animal managed to escape.
The news of the leopard cub spread among residents and created an atmosphere of panic. Since then, children have been stopped from playing outside.
R K Shahi, a resident of AVJ Heights, said that the locals spotted the suspected leopard cub three to four times in two days. “There are 11 towers in the society. Tower B is under construction, and residents spotted the suspected leopard in its vicinity between Thursday night and Friday morning. A resident from the eighth floor of Tower K made a video of the animal,” he said.
In one video, the animal is seen climbing a grille. Shahi said it seemed it was a leopard due to its climbing skills.
Nearly 7,000 people live in the 1,844 flats of the 11 towers in the society. The society management has asked residents not to leave their children alone on the premises.
PK Srivastava, divisional forest officer (DFO), Gautam Budh Nagar, said that a forest department team reached the spot and launched a search but did not find the leopard.
“We are keeping a watch,” he said.
In the past, leopards have been spotted in human settlements in Greater Noida. A big cat was seen last year on the NTPC campus in Dadri.
