LUCKNOW: Although late by a week, monsoon arrived in the city with a bang on Thursday, resulting in a record rainfall on day one. The big push, in fact, was so strong that the currents covered the entire central and west UP as well as adjoining states within 24 hours.
Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall was reported from most parts of the state. Similar conditions will continue till Saturday, but the intensity of rains will decline thereafter.
The city recorded 55.4 mm rainfall - 47.4 mm rainfall from midnight till 8.30 am and 8 mm from 8.30 am till 5.30 pm. It was the highest in a single day in the month of June in three years after 58.4 mm recorded on June 9, 2018.
The maximum temperature plummeted to 26.8 degrees Celsius, nine units below normal, and minimum temperature 24.2 degrees Celsius, 2.5 notches below normal.
Palia Kalan in Lakhimpur Kheri recorded 140 mm rainfall, highest in UP followed by Ghazipur and Deoria 130 mm each and Bijnor 120 mm. Other parts of the state recorded rainfall between 30-100 mm. State Met director JP Gupta said monsoon currents were energised by a trough - an elongated region of low atmospheric pressure - passing from over UP and heavy moisture feed from the
Bay of Bengal. Conditions are favorable for further advancement into some more parts of Rajasthan,” he added
