In the old quarters of Srinagar, the centuries-old tradition of pigeon keeping has remained ingrained to life.

Every Friday and Sunday, various breeds of domesticated and wild pigeons are sold in the local Pigeon Market.

Keepers have for years been keeping their pigeons in coops, which are usually set up in the attics of homes.

The birds are often released to mingle with other pigeons; sometimes strays accompany them when they return.

But pigeon keeping is hard work. These owners have to brave harsh winters and those occasional curfews .

The handlers clean out coops, bring bird feed and give constant care with vaccines and dietary supplements.

They look alike to the untrained eye, but some pigeon varieties are costly, even fetching thousands of rupees.

Such pigeon breeds are very sensitive and need meticulous care. And keeping them needs lots of patience.
