The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday sought a five-day stay on an order passed by a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Thursday permitting fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi’s brother-in-law Maiank Mehta to travel to his residence in Hong Kong. Mehta is an approver against Nirav in the Punjab National Bank case.

The court on Friday issued a notice to Maiank to file a response today. On June 16, the court had permitted Mehta to travel, but he could not do so due to a pending Look Out Circular (LOC) against him, in spite of the court’s order that any LOC’s against him be suspended. He had then made a fresh plea to be permitted to travel. The court, while permitting it on Thursday, had directed the Bureau of Immigration to ensure he has a seamless travel.
