NOIDA: The city police on Wednesday arrested a man near the Panchsheel underpass in Section 137 while smuggling marijuana worth over Rs 42 lakh. Police said that he was getting over 400 kgs of the drug from Odisha to be sold in various parts of Delhi-NCR.
The accused has been identified as Ajit Kumar, a resident of Mainpuri district in
Uttar Pradesh.
“Our team at the Phase 2 police station received a tip-off that narcotics were being moved through the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. They set up a checkpost and apprehended Ajit Kumar who was driving a truck. The vehicle was filled with 425 kg of marijuana. We have recovered 17 packets of the drug, each weighing 25 kg," said DCP Harish Chandar.
Police said the vehicle seized had a license plate of Haryana. When cops questioned Kumar regarding the material in the vehicle, he said there were household goods which were being transported to a different location. The drug was hidden in several packages behind furniture such as chairs, tables, mattresses, a cot, an almirah, along with appliances and even a cycle and a motorcycle.
“The accused is part of an interstate drug smuggling gang and has several accomplices. We are trying to find out more about others involved in Haryana, Odisha and Delhi,” added the DCP.
