
Coronavirus News Highlights Today: Delhi recorded 678 new cases on Friday and 2 pandemic related deaths. The positivity rate stands at 3.98%. India reported 17,092 new Covid-19 cases and 29 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 8 am Saturday, data from the Union health ministry said. The total number of active cases in the country now stands at 1,09,568.
New Covid cases in Mumbai dropped further to 978 on Friday, a day after the city registered 1,265 cases. Mumbai’s daily caseload plunged by 22.6 per cent in the last 24 hours. The test positivity rate (TPR) — the number of positive cases out of the total tests conducted — stood at 7.8 per cent in the city with 12,452 tests conducted on Friday. The city also witnessed two Covid-related deaths. A nine-year-old girl, who had underlying comorbidities such as epilepsy and glycogen Storage Disorder Type III, succumbed to the infection.
Delhi on Friday reported 813 fresh COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 5.30 per cent, while three more people succumbed to the viral disease, according to data shared by the health department.This is the second consecutive day when the daily case count has been recorded in the range of 800-1,000. With the fresh infections and fatalities, Delhi’s caseload climbed to 19,35,687 and the death toll increased to 26,264, the health department bulletin said.
Karnataka on Saturday clocked 975 fresh Covid-19 cases and one death, taking the caseload to 39,71,459 and fatalities to 40,077 respectively, the health department said.
The day also saw 668 people being discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 39,24,900. Active cases in the state stood at 6,440, a health department bulletin said.
Bengaluru Urban accounted for the maximum number of 871 cases, it said.
Other districts too reported new Covid-19 cases including 22 in Mysuru, 14 in Dakshina Kannada, nine each in Dharwad and Kolar, and, six each in Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Shivamogga. (PTI)
All sections of people in Puducherry should ensure that they adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour without lowering their guard against spread of the pandemic in the Union Territory, a senior official said on Saturday.
Secretary to Revenue-cum-Member Secretary to State Executive Committee of Disaster Management Authority of Puducherry E Vallavan, who issued an order in the wake of 'rise in number of Covid-19 cases', said the public should adhere to Covid guidelines at places of public gathering, market places.
All field level functionaries such as Health, Police, Revenue, Local Administration Department and Labour shall without causing panic ensure wearing of masks by the public and maintained social distancing, he stated. (PTI)
Telangana on Saturday recorded 516 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the overall tally to 8,01,922 so far. Hyderabad district registered the highest number of cases with 261.
A health department bulletin said 434 people recuperated from the infection and the cumulative number of recoveries till date was 7,93,027. The recovery rate declined to 98.89 per cent.
No fresh fatality occurred due to the infectious disease and the death toll remained at 4,111. (PTI)

Nagaland on Saturday reported three new Covid-19 cases, one more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 35,512, a health department official said.
Two fresh infections were detected in Dimapur district and one in Mokokchung, he said.
Two more persons from Dimapur and Mokokchung recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 33,253, the official said. The recovery rate is 93.64 per cent at present. (PTI)
Jammu and Kashmir's Covid-19 tally climbed to 4,55,257 on Saturday with 74 fresh cases, while no new deaths were reported, officials here said.
Of the fresh cases, 50 cases were reported from the Jammu division of the union territory and 24 from the Kashmir valley, the officials said.
There are 561 active Covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. (PTI)
Gujarat on Saturday reported 580 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 12,33,242, while the death toll remained unchanged at 10,947, a state health department official said.
The recovery count increased by 391 during the day to touch 12,18,817, leaving the state with an active caseload of 3,478, he said.
Ahmedabad reported 236 new cases, the highest in the state, followed by Surat with 106 cases, Vadodara 36 and Mehsana 29 cases, among other districts, he added. (PTI)

Government policy think tank NITI Aayog has released a compendium of Ayush-based practices from states and union territories for containing and managing the Covid-19 outbreak, an official statement said.
Releasing the compendium, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery said it is critical to communicate the learnings from the testing times during the Covid-19 outbreak about how Ayush practices implemented at national and state level benefited people.
The compendium provides information focused on practices adopted by various states and UTs of India for strengthening the country's fight against Covid-19, using Ayush's resources and interventions, Bery added.
Thane district in Maharashtra has reported 546 new coronavirus positive cases. With the addition of these cases on Friday, there are now 5,110 active cases in the district. One patient died due to the infection during the day. (PTI)
Assam has reported 78 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in the last three months, taking the total cases to 7,24,926, according to the National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin.
The positivity rate has increased to 7.84% on Friday as against the previous day's 7.54%, it said.
The number of active Covid-19 cases has increased to 468 as against the previous day's 425, the bulletin said on Friday. Kamrup (Metro) district reported the highest of 64 cases followed by 12 in Kamrup (Rural) district and one each in Biswanath and Goalpara. (PTI)
Ladakh reported 11 new Covid cases that pushed the infection tally to 28,429, officials said on Saturday. All the new cases were detected in Leh, taking the active cases in the district to 82, officials said.
The Ladakh administration on Friday had ordered a 15-day summer vacation in all government and private schools in Leh district from July 4 amid a spike in Covid cases. (PTI)
Odisha recorded 231 new cases on Friday, 27 more than the previous day, the highest in four months. There are 1,035 active Covid-19 cases, the first time since March 11 that the current infections were above the 1,000 mark.
The daily test positivity rate rose to 1.7 per cent out of 13,628 samples.
Khurda district reported the highest number of new cases at 99, followed by 35 in Cuttack. Thirty children were among the new infections. The toll remained at 9,126 as there were no fresh deaths. (PTI)
The country’s current surge in Covid-19 cases is because of the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron — which drove the third wave in January, along with BA.1 — and another sub-variant that has branched off from it, called BA.2.38. Earlier this week, Delhi reported its first couple of cases of the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron — this was one of the sub-variants that led to an increase in cases in South Africa a couple of months ago. After a push from the government to increase the coverage of precaution doses of the Covid vaccine, the numbers crossed the 2 lakh mark in two Delhi districts – West and New Delhi – which have been leading in the administration of the third dose in terms of numbers and proportion of population covered. West district has administered 2.19 lakh precaution doses so far, while New Delhi district has administered 2.08 lakh.
