MYSURU: A parliamentary panel on Thursday visited various villages in Mysuru district and reviewed the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
In Nagawala village on the city outskirts, the MPs inspected a kalyani that is said to be 400 years old and the Sakadevamma temple lake. Both were rejuvenated through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.
According to the Nagawala panchayat, both the water sources were in bad shape before the start of the rejuvenation work.
The Sakadevamma temple lake was rejuvenated through 1,401 human days of work. Rs.4.06 lakh was paid as the daily wage for the labourers under MGNREGA. In total Rs 8 lakh was spent on rejuvenation work.
Similarly, the kalyani was rejuvenated for Rs 6 lakh.
The committee members hailed the initiatives.
However, one of the members, Sakshi Ji Swami Maharaj, expressed displeasure over the selected works saying these rejuvenation works were carried out under the scheme which was launched by the previous government and is not related to the Jalashakti ministry. However, officials clarified that this was an example of the convergence of the schemes to improve water bodies.
Nagawala gram panchayat president Narendra C requested the committee members to release funds for the rejuvenation of the old lake next to the kalyani.
The 15 members of the parliament were felicitated by the villagers with Mysuru Peta. The MPs also visited a local lake.
Senior officials of rural development and panchayati raj ministries were present.
