Belagavi: Deputy commissioner Nitesh Patil has said that there would be no village in the district without a government graveyard after three months.
His statement came after a protest by Enagi villagers in Savadatti taluk on Monday. They brought a body of a villager to the premises of the DC office, demanding an approach road to the graveyard.
Patil said land will be bought at three times higher than the price fixed by the revenue department for the graveyard in case there is no government land belonging to a panchayat.
If the land is available, the order for the graveyard will be passed in the next two days.
He urged local leaders in villages to work as mediators while purchasing private land and cooperate with the district administration.
Chairing the quarterly district SC/ST atrocity committee meeting on Wednesday, Patil said the work of identifying villages without a graveyard and developing one in every village will the taken up in the next three months. He said funds from the government will be sought for the development of the existing graveyards like erecting buildings, compound walls and installing sheds.
Committee member Suresh Talwar urged that making the buildings should be taken up on priority to stop illegal encroachment.
Responding to him, Patil said stringent action would be taken to protect the land of graveyards as well as lakes.
