Guwahati: A 45-year-old daily wager was killed after being trapped under the debris following a landslide that took place in Guwahati’s Noonmati area on Wednesday afternoon. The victim has been identified as Prakash Deka, a resident of Bhabanipur locality of the city. Later, police recovered the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
Earlier, four construction workers — Manowar Hussain, Mafizul Hoque, Aminul Hoque and Hasmat Ali of Dhubri — were killed in a major landslide that took place in Guwahati’s Boragaon area. The incident took place while they were sleeping and incessant rain triggered the landslide.
The capital city experienced excess rainfall from June 13 to June 18.
After a brief hiatus, the city has again received incessant light to moderate rain from Tuesday. According to the district disaster management authority, at least 80 incidents of landslide took place in the city from April till Wednesday.
With the death on Wednesday, the total death toll due to landslide in the state has gone up to 18 this year.
A total of 80 people were killed in around 1,000 landslide incidents across the state since 2016, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
