AHMEDABAD: A 28-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl from the Baherampura area of Ahmedabad on Thursday died by suicide by jumping into Sabarmati river in Paldi.
The reason behind the suicide was not known, said officers of Sabarmati police (west).
A police officer said the girl was missing since Wednesday.
“As she did not return to her home from school in Maninagar till 1pm on Thursday, her family members started searching for her. Later, they filed a complaint of abduction with Maninagar police also,” said a police officer.
At around 12.15pm on Friday, an eight-year-old boy, who was cycling on the riverfront, saw the girl and the Karan Parmar jumping into the river after tying their hands with each other.
The boy immediately rushed to Sabarmati riverfront (west) police, which was nearly 50 metre away, and informed a cop about the suicide attempt. One of the cops, who was a trained diver, rushed to the spot and tried to search for the two.
Rescuers of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) reached the spot and fished out the bodies from the river.
The girl’s family members reached there and identified her. The police also informed Parmar’s family.
The girl’s father said, “My family was not aware of how and when he eloped with my daughter.”
Another family member said, “She never told us about him. We suspect that he might have forced her to elope with him.”
A police officer said that the man had cut marks on his wrist also which suggested that he might have tried to commit suicide by slashing his wrist.
