Serena Williams made her first Grand Slam appearance for the first time in 12 months and the most striking aspect of her return was the black tape on her face.

When the 23-time Grand Slam took to the Centre Court at Wimbledon for her battle with France's Harmony Tan, fans were surprised to see a black patch on her cheek.

According to a report in the British newspaper, The Times, the tape on Serena's cheek is a medical tape which helps the 40-year-old relive her sinus problems.

The eight-time Wimbledon champion also wore the tape to enchance her performances during the doubles semi-finals at the Eastbourne event recently.

Serena lost the three-hour long opening round battle to Tan 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.

"When you're at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I've won a Grand Slam, is something that's always super special," Serena was quoted as saying by wtatennis.com.

"Your first time is always special. There's definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home," she added.
