The server of a co-operative bank in Thane was hacked into last week, with fraudsters siphoning off Rs 2.53 crore from customers’ accounts. A complaint was lodged with the Wagle Estate police in Thane by the bank’s IT manager on Sunday. On June 24, the bank was informed by its technical consultant of 48 unauthorised transactions from five different accounts in a single day.
A police officer said they are probing the technical details and “getting information of the beneficiary accounts in which the money was transferred”. Meanwhile, an offence has been registered for theft, forgery, identity theft and cheating by personation by using a computer resource, besides other charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
