Mumbai: Man lodges complaint after harassment from loan sharks

As per the complaint filed by the victim, the recovery agents forced him to pay around Rs 2.50 lakh more and continued to threaten him

A 28-year-old Jogeshwari resident has lodged a police complaint against loan recovery agents for allegedly forcing him to pay more than the loan amount, illegally accessing his gallery, obscenely morphing his photographs and sending them to his friends in the contact list.

According to the Meghwadi police, the complainant works in a private company and since he was in need of money, he had downloaded at least seven mobile loan apps on his phone during April-May and had taken a loan of Rs 74,500 through the apps. The victim had timely repaid the loan amount as per the terms and conditions of the loan apps.

The victim in his complaint has stated that, despite having repaid the loan, recovery agents of the apps had been calling him and threatening him to pay more money. When the victim told the agents that he had repaid all his loans, the agents threatened him that they would send obscene messages to those on his contact list.

As per the complaint filed by the victim, the recovery agents forced him to pay around Rs 2.50 lakh more and continued to threaten him saying they would send obscene messages to those in his contact list and kept demanding more money.

When the victim refused to pay more money, the accused prepared morphed obscene images and videos of the victim and sent them to those in his contact list. The victim had provided mobile numbers of at least 31 loan recovery agents to the police in his complaint, police said.

The police have registered a case on charges of extortion, putting a person in fear of injury in order to commit extor­tion, cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, criminal intimidation, publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form, identity theft, publishing or transmitting of material containing the sexually explicit act, etc., in electronic form, cheating by personation by using computer resource, compensation for failure to protect data and relevant sections of the Maharashtra Money-Lending (Regulation) Act.
