The Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) for 2018–19 and 2019–20, which was released today evaluates the effectiveness of the school education system at the District level by developing an index for thorough analysis. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L) along with the Ministry of Education.

PGI-D assigns each district one of 10 grades, with Daksh—the highest grade that can be earned—awarded to districts that receive more than 90% of the total points in a category or overall. PGI-lowest D's grade, known as Akanshi-3, is given for scores that are up to 10% of the total points. The main goal of PGI-D is to assist districts in prioritizing areas for educational intervention so that they can improve and receive the highest grade possible.

The survey for 2019-20 revealed Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar, and Kerala remain the top 5 performing states in the country.

The five domains used to test the states in the survey were Outcomes & Quality of Learning, Access, Infrastructure & Facilities, and Equity, and Governance Processes.

Punjab topped the domains of access, infrastructure, equity, and governance. Rajasthan, on the other hand, excelled at learning outcomes.
