
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and discussed issues related to trade, investment, defence and food security. The meeting is significant as South Africa, a BRICS member, has also adopted a neutral stand on Russia-Ukraine war. India and South Africa are working closely at the WTO too.
Both leaders also welcomed the WTO agreement reached in June 2022 that supports the production of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries. India and South Africa had submitted the first proposal suggesting a waiver for all WTO members on the implementation of certain provisions of the TRIPS Agreement in relation to the prevention, containment or treatment of COVID-19.
Modi, who is in Germany on a two-day visit from Sunday for the G7 summit, tweeted: “Glad to have met President @CyrilRamaphosa in Germany. Our talks covered diverse sectors including economic cooperation, improving connectivity and deepening ties in food processing and FinTech.”
“Boosting engagement with a valued partner. PM @narendramodi and President @CyrilRamaphosa held talks on the sidelines of the G7 summit. They discussed the full range of friendship between India and South Africa including ways to boost trade and people-to-people ties,” the Prime Minister’s Office said on Twitter.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the two leaders discussed further expansion of “bilateral ties in trade, investment, defence, pharmaceuticals, food security and more. Agreed to continue close cooperation in both regional and multilateral fora”.
Ramaphosa was the chief guest at India’s 70th republic day celebration in 2019. The year 2022 marks 25 years of strategic partnership between the two countries.
Modi also met Indonesian President Jokowi. Indonesia is the current G20 chair and coordinating closely with India, G20 chair in 2023. “PM @narendramodi and President @jokowi had a productive meeting. Their talks will add strength to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia. Both leaders also discussed ways to boost connectivity and business linkages,” The PMO tweeted. India is seeking to assist Indonesia develop its ports.
With the German Chancellor, Modi focussed on commerce and energy ties. Modi tweeted, “Excellent meeting with @Bundeskanzler Scholz. Thanked him for the warm hospitality during the @G7Summit. We discussed cooperation in key sectors like commerce and energy. We also had deliberations on furthering environmentally friendly growth for our planet.”
Besides India, G7 host Germany has invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa as guests for the summit to recognise the democracies of the global south as its partners.
