  • Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick says they've got a decent succession plan in place to replace their stars when they retire.
  • A bunch of talented youngsters is part of the 43-man group for the Wales series that starts in Pretoria next week.
  • Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber hopes the series can work in their favour so that they can test their depth.

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick said they've got a more than a workable succession plan to ensure their seasoned playing personnel will be seamlessly replaced when they hang up their boots.

The Springboks' 43-man group for the Wales series contains several youngsters that performed beyond expectations in the United Rugby Championship.

While the main goal is to keep their 100 percent home record against Wales intact when the sides meet next month in three Tests, Stick said it was necessary they also had an eye on the future.

"In whatever we do, we have a succession plan, which is evident with the selection of these young guns like Evan Roos," Stick said.

"So, when the time comes for them to make the step up when the current guard moves on, they will be ready.

"By the time their time comes, they need to have gleaned as much experience from the wise heads so they can fit in.

"We also do have the responsibility to blood them properly, but what has also helped is the excellent leadership group that we have here.

"We're in a very good position here and we can't as coaches complain."

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber also hoped that the Wales series will turn out in such a way that they'll have an opportunity to blood new players.

This was attempted with some success against Argentina in Gqeberha last year, but the topsy-turvy nature of results in the Rugby Championship in Australia didn't allow for that.

"We have a longer-term view and we look at this as a six-week block [and] a three-week preparation block for the series," Nienaber said.

"The other three weeks are for the Test matches, and when we actually have the opportunity to get some guys in, there's a lot of things we need to factor in.

"We may have a player we last had in 2018 who is now married and has two kids, but the skillset has changed significantly.

"I may also have changed in that time period and I also hope we've evolved for the better, like the players.

"If everything goes according to plan, we hope to give everybody a taste of international rugby."
