RANCHI: A Delhi Public School (DPS), Ranchi, alumni Aditi Shreya, who is currently a student of the National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal, has been selected for the 14th Nelson Mandela Human Rights World Moot Court Competition to be held at Palais De Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 18 to 21. Aditi, who completed her Class XII from the DPS in 2021, and her batch-mate Ishita Warghat from the NLIU are among the 16 teams, which have been selected for the international event after several rounds of oral and written competitions.
The competitions started with the submission of a ‘memorial’ containing arguments for and against a hypothetical human rights violation of a set of individuals. After going through the presentations of 50 university teams, the organisers selected 10 from each United Nations region. The team comprising Aditi and Ishita were among 10 teams shortlisted from the South Pacific Region.
Later, four online oral rounds were held between May 23 and 29 during which, a panel of judges belonging to different countries heard the arguments presented by the teams for and against human rights issues. Eventually, 16 teams from across the world were picked for the competition in Geneva.
The teams would compete with each other in Geneva and the best two would contest in the finals on July 21.
Talking to TOI, Aditi said “It was due to the exhaustive preparation since February 2022 and guidance of our seniors that we have made it to the international competition in Geneva. During the selection process, we tried to come up with new points in our arguments to score over our rivals. We are now gearing up to perform well in Geneva.”
DPS principal Dr Ram Singh said, “Aditi has made us proud and proved that dreams coupled with determination lead to success stories.”
Notably, the competition is organized by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa, in collaboration with the secretariat of the United Nations Human Right Council. It aims to bring together students, academics and judges from across the globe to argue on hypothetical human rights violation cases.
