Kolhapur civic body fines contractor of Rs 45,000

KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has slapped a fine of Rs 45,000 on a contractor for keeping unprocessed solid waste in the open.
The solid waste processing plant located at Kasba Bawda in Kolhapur city has been made operational and it is currently operating at full capacity of processing 180 tonne of waste every day.
The plant was shut for over a week due to which collection of waste from homes and commercial establishments had to completely stop. The plant has two sections, one that segregates the dry and wet waste while the second used the wet waste for biogas plant.
Ravikant Adsul, deputy municipal commissioner, said, “Bio-mining was not taking place properly and the waste was also lying in the open unprocessed. As per rules, we have imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 per day on the contractor for the last 45 days.”
As per the report submitted by the panel, increment of an official appointed for supervision has been stopped while a sanitation official has been terminated.
