Thiruvananthapuram: After two youths were killed during a bike racing conducted on the bypass road at Mukkola near Vizhinjam recently, the police have started taking the list of all the youths who were arrested previously for bike racing in the area.
“We have been checking the mobile tower locations of all the suspects to cross check it with the bike racing location. If they are found to be in the same spot, action will be initiated against them under Section 279 of the IPC for rash driving,” said station house officer (SHO) of Vizhinjam police station Prajeesh Sasi.
Police can charge bike racers only for rash driving as there is no separate section to book them for bike racing.
The SHO further said that frequent patrolling is held in the area to nab the culprits and they are also planning to recommend to the motor vehicles department (MVD) to cancel the licence of the bike racers.
“We register at least two to three cases per day for rash driving,” said the SHO.
The particular spot where the accident took place is a favourite spot for bike racers.
Residents said that the disturbances caused by roaring bikes are a concern for them.
Venganoor councillor Sindhu Vijayan said that college students from various parts of the districts arrive there for bike racing.
“Through awareness we can prevent youths from engaging in such dangerous practice. Police patrolling alone would not be effective,” said Sindhu.
Meanwhile, the youngsters seem to have not learned anything from the fatal accident.
The dangerous practice of racing bikes has been continuing unabated in the area despite intensified police patrolling.
Even on Wednesday, two youths were arrested by the Vizhinjam police for rash driving . Aneesh (24) and Rahul (22), both the natives of Kottappuram, were held during a police patrol.
On Sunday, Sarath from Chowara and Mohammed Firoz from Vattiyoorkavu were killed during the race after their bikes collided head-on with each other.
Their helmets broke into pieces and they died on the spot.
