Sharad Pawar on who is behind Sena rebellion
Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said he did not see the BJP's role in the rebellion within the Shiv Sena. NCP chief Sharad Pawar said he did not agree with his nephew. "Ajit Pawar may have said so because he does not know BJP leaders from outside Maharashtra. I know them. Even Eknath Shinde has said a national party has assured him of all assistance," Pawar said.
Uddhav Thackeray has support of allies
In this rough battle against the rebels, Uddhav Thackeray has the support of coalition partners Congress and NCP. Sharad Pawar, the patriarch of the MVA alliance, said yesterday night. Why a new resolution by Shinde camp
The new resolution passed by the Eknath Shinde camp yesterday night has the signature of 37 Shiv Sena MLAs - the number needed to evade disqualification under the anti-defection law. The new resolution has been done again. The earlier resolution had the signature of 32 MLAs, of which only 29 belonged to the Shiv Sena. It also had the signature of Nitin Deshmukh, the MLA who has gone back to Uddhav Thackeray.
Sena workers didn't approve of MVA: Goa BJP chief
Goa BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade said Shiv Sena workers in Maharashtra were angry because of Uddhav Thackeray's decision to form alliance with the NCP and Congress. Tanavade said the Sena workers had not approved of the alliance. "The workers were angry with such an alliance,” he said. adding that the Sena defied its principles only to get the chief minister's post.
Why it's a desperate battle for the Shiv Sena
- For the Shiv Sena, this battle is not just to save the Maha Vikas Aghadi government but also to save the party from the BJP’s growing influence in Maharashtra.
- From 1990 to 2004, the Shiv Sena was the dominant partner in Mahatashtra. The trend reversed in 2009, when for the first time the BJP won two seats more than the Shiv Sena.
- The gap became huge in 2014 when the BJP won 122 seats, nearly double that of the Shiv Sena’s 63.
- In 2019, the BJP won 105 and the Shiv Sena won only 55. The Sena broke away and teamed up with rivals Congress and NCP to form the MVA.
Next step: Letter to governor
Eknath Shinde is likely to soon send a letter to Maharashtra governor BS Koshyari withdrawing support to the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. His camp has 37 MLAs, the number needed to dodge disqualification under the anti-defection law. The governor will then have to ask chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to prove his majority on the floor of the House.
We know the law: Shinde's response
The Uddhav Thackeray camp has filed a petition before the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly seeking the cancellation of membership of 12 rebel MLAs. The reason given was that they "did not attend" the legislative party meeting held on Wednesday. "We know your ways and the law too! According to Schedule 10 of the Constitution, the whip is used for assembly work, not for meetings," Eknath Shinde tweeted in response.
Disqualifications sought by Shiv Sena
Apart from Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena has sought disqualification of Prakash Surve, Tanaji Sawant, Mahesh Shinde, Abdul Sattar, Sandeep Bhumare, Bharat Gogawale, Sanjay Shirsat, Yamini Yadhav, Anil Babar, Balaji Devdas, and Lata Chaudhari, reports said.
You can't scare us: Shinde hits back at Sena
Eknath Shinde hit back at the Shiv Sena after the party wrote to the Maharashtra Assembly deputy speaker seeking the disqualification of 12 rebel MLAs. "You cannot scare us by giving the names of 12 MLAs for disqualification because we are followers of the Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. We know the law, so we do not pay heed to threats," he posted to Twitter.
Behind close doors, BJP gets numbers ready
The BJP has been quietly roping in Independents into its fold in anticipation of the floor test. The party has tried to distance itself from the Sena rebels, although they have used police security of Gujarat and Assam, both ruled by the BJP. Yesterday BJP 'attached' Vinod Aggarwal, the Gondiya independent MLA. Independent MLA Geeta Jain, a former BJP member, met Devendra Fadnavis.
With the numbers heavily stacked against him, Uddhav Thackeray has been cornered in the party founded more than half a century ago by his father.
