Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)
TRICHY: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Thursday conducted a consultative meeting with stakeholders to assess the feasibility of introducing a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) project for Trichy city. A comprehensive urban mobility plan and a detailed feasibility report are to be prepared in consultation with Trichy corporation and state highways department for finding a model suiting the geography and to address the demands of the city including the urban agglomeration.
The meeting chaired by CMRL managing director M A Siddique, district collector M Pradeep Kumar and Trichy corporation commissioner Dr R Vaithinathan discussed plans to identify potential and feasible routes for the proposed MRTS. The study area of the project is likely to cover about 803 sqkm including the core area of Trichy city (without the proposed expansion) sprawling for 167 sq. km. The mobility plan is to be prepared through Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL). Apart from the city, suburban areas covering Samayapuram, Thuvakudi and around 103 villages are to be studied for preparing the feasibility report.
“The objective is to simplify the public transport infrastructure available. Soon, we will prepare a comprehensive mobility plan to finalise the MRTS proposal,” Siddique said.
