NOIDA: A six-month-old girl was admitted to Post Graduate Institute of Child Health (PGICH) after she had accidentally consumed toilet cleaner on Monday, doctors said. The girl’s family is from Islamabad Kalda in Noida. She was brought to PGICH on Monday with serious internal wounds and was facing difficulty in breathing.
After examination at the emergency ward, it was found that the girl had severe metabolic acidosis and swelling of upper respiratory system with significant damage caused due to acid in the oral cavity, including the alimentary canal. Nebulisation was started immediately and an endoscopy of her upper GI track was performed by Dr DV Umesh Reddy within 24 hours.
The team of doctors, including Dr Umesh Shukla, head of the department in gastroenterology, decided to put the girl on life support system and her treatment was started. After almost two days, the doctors found improvement in her respiratory system. The girl was discharged on Thursday and has been asked to come for a follow-up check after three days, doctors said. Through an endoscopy, it was found that the child had superficial ulcers with swelling in the oral cavity and the entire oesophagus.
