Thiruvananthapuram: When Sunimol was clueless about the life ahead with two cancer patients in her house, which had received an eviction notice from the bank, she received a helping hand from the Freemasonry family.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) had collected Rs 2.15L from its members and has completely repaid their loan. The property will be returned to the family on the occasion of the celebration of Universal Brotherhood Day at the Freemasons Hall in Vazhuthacaud on Friday.
She has been working in a cashew nut factory since her husband passed away 12 years ago. Although she was the only bread winner of the family, she had to quit the job to take care of her mother. “We came to know about the family when Sunimol approached ‘Asraya’ for financial help when her mother was taking treatment in Thiruvananthapuram RCC. The family had taken a loan of Rs 75,000 and failure in paying the interest had made it a huge amount. The service was provided to the family as part of the action plan of the organization,” said one of the members of Freemasonry.
Things became more difficult when her mother Kunjamma Joy was diagnosed with cancer six months ago. Her brother Johnkutty was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago and was unable to work. As a result, she had to avail a loan for urgent medical needs and was unable to repay the amount.
“It has been 9 years since my brother went to work and his wife is a heart patient. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I quit my job to take care of her. We are grateful to the Freemasonry for helping us,” said Sunimol.
