Dharwad: Banks should be liberal in sanctioning and disbursing loans to women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and joint liability groups (JLGs) so their members attain economic independence, said G R Chintala, chairman of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard). He was addressing the members of SHGs and farmers at a programme arranged at Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank here on the occasion of his first visit to North Karnataka region on Tuesday. Meanqhile, Nabard has signed an MoU with Canara Bank in connection with the formation and linking of JLGs. Canara Bank chief general manager Debananda Sahoo and Nabard’s chief general manager T Ramesh signed the agreement. As per the agreement, Canara Bank will form and credit link 2,510 JLGs in the state.
‘Mgmt institutes should focus on research’
Dharwad: Researchers should emphasise more on the study regarding current economy, management issues and inflow of capital, said director of IIM-Tiruchirapalli, Pavankumar Singh. H was delivering a keynote address on 'Latest trends in economy, business and management' at the two-day national conference on business management organised by the Kousali Institute of Management Studies at KU in Dharwad on Tuesday. “Economics is the root of commerce and management studies. Management institutes should conduct research on latest issues related to management like finance, commerce and issues related to economics,” he added. Leading businessman Rajendra Belagaumkar said students should prepare themselves for the current business demands. Former vice-chancellor of Shri Krishnadevaraya University and former director of KIMS M S Subhas said management institutes should focus more on research. KU VC K B Gudasi,registrar Yashpal Ksheersagar, dean Ramesh Kulkarni and director A M Kadakol also spoke.
‘Crop diversification, a solution to climate change’
Dharwad: Director general of the department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Government of India, T Mohapatra has stated that diversification is necessary in agriculture to overcome problems caused by climate change and to reduce malnutrition and improve sustainability in agriculture. Delivering a virtual keynote address at the Krishi Vijnan Kendras (KVK) zonal workshop held at UAS here recently, he said India’s dependence on other countries for oilseeds and pulses should come down and this could be achieved only through diversification of crops. Mahapatra said 730 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) are working in India and they have become an inseparable part of farmers’ life for advice, guidance and adoption of new technology to increase revenue and productivity. KVK stakeholders from Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep attended the workshop.

Hubballi: Swabhimana Foundation will felicitate government school students who have scored well in the recently SSLC exam and other young talent at Sawai Gandharva Hall here on June 25. Foundation president Manjunath Kodapalli told reporters here on Wednesday that every year, Prathibha Puraskara are given to those who have excelled in SSLC and economically poor students to encourage them for future studies. Students who have done well in sports, cultural activiites and shown other talents will also be honoured, he said. The programme will be presided over by social activist Dr. K S Sharma.
