At Wayanad tourism, safety gets prime importance

For ensuring tourist safety, the Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council, has created a model by forming trained rapid response teams in all the centers of tourism under different departments.


Few months back, the Wayanad district administration together with the council had introduced a disaster-resilient tourist destination team under the safe tourism campaign of the Wayanad tourism and the RRTs were built as part of the said campaign.


The secretary, DTPC, Wayanad, Mr. K.G. Ajesh, told The Hindu that the project visualizes in allowing all the tourism destinations in Wayanad to manage with any sort of catastrophe with confidence. Mr. Ajesh asserted that in India for the first time such RRTs were created exclusively for various hotspots.


A separate disaster management plan will be there for every tourist destination. He said that a specially trained alarm system for emergency response and warning systems on the basis of geographical characteristics of each area will be there.


A training programme for 125 shortlisted members of the RRT from 25 important tourism centres under different departments in the district was arranged on Wednesday at the Karlad Lake, the manager, DTPC, P.M. Ratheesh Babu, explained.


The National Disaster Response Force experts and District Disaster Management Authority instructed the members of RRT on the way to handle a flood situation, mass evacuation during a natural adversity and save operations in water with materials available locally, Mr. Ratheesh said.
