MUMBAI: A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court on Tuesday allowed state cabinet minister Nawab Malik, arrested in a money laundering case, to sign documents related to allocation of funds for public welfare in his capacity as a member of the legislative assembly.
"Having regard to the concerns of public welfare, I am of the view that it is necessary to give permission to the applicant (Malik) to sign the letters," said Special Judge RN Rokade.
The court gave its nod even as the Enforcement Directorate, strongly opposed his plea on grounds that he may influence the investigations by availing this opportunity to dissuade the witnesses by sending them letters. The ED claimed if permission is granted to address the official correspondence, it would defeat the very purpose of judicial custody.
