Coimbatore Collector warns of fake WhatsApp account

COIMBATORE: Collector G S Sameeran on Wednesday took to Twitter to alert people about miscreants, who created a fake WhatsApp account in his name to seek money through Amazon Pay coupon.
The ID was created using his picture and mobile number 8788019763, the collector said. “The issue was taken to the notice of the city police’s cyber cell and a case was registered. Scamsters had earlier involved in similar activity by posing as senior government officials. Police will take action against such people,” he said.
The cyber cell has launched an inquiry into the incident, city police commissioner V Balakrishnan said, and urged people to be wary of such fraudsters. “We have gathered information about a criminal network functioning in north India. A police team will be dispatched to arrest the mastermind,” he said.
