MUMBAI: A 26-year-old Andheri resident, employed as a business development director in a private firm, became the latest victim of sextortion and ended up paying over Rs 1 lakh after he accepted a friend request from a woman on social media.
The police said that during the chat the woman was naked and asked the complainant to undress while chatting with her.
An hour later, the woman demanded money for not making the video viral. The complainant paid up, but later when he declined to pay more, the woman sent the video to one of his friends who accepted her friend request on social media.
In the complaint, the victim said, “The incident occurred on Sunday at around 7 pm. I was surfing the social media page when I received a friend request from this woman. I did not accept the request at first. But got into chatting when the same woman ping me on chat messenger. While chatting, the woman asked to share my WhatsApp number which I did. In no time she came on WhatsApp video call.”
Around 9.36pm the woman demanded Rs 30,000 after sending the nude video and threatened to make it viral on social media. She kept demanding more. The police said the complainant made four fund transfers at 9.36pm and 10pm before approaching them.
“A team has been formed to track the woman, who chatted with the complainant using the name Anuskha Sharma, through the internet protocol address. We have sought details from the bank to which account the money was credited,” said a police officer.
