Nagpur: A 50-year-old, who retired from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), shot at two persons fleeing on a bike after they assaulted him and his wife at Jaitala on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, one of them had picked up a quarrel with Prasad’s wife over buying cigarettes.
Suresh Thanekar, 52, sustained bullet injuries on his left shoulder while he was trying to flee riding pillion on the bike of Purushattam Sonekar after the fight. The shooter, Ganesh Prasad, and his wife too had been injured after being attacked with a stick and sharp weapon by Thanekar and his aide Sonekar.
Prasad, who retired from service in CRPF in 2016 from Chhattisgarh, owns two licensed firearms. He works as a security personnel at a bank at Civil Lines. Prasad is learnt to have used his licensed .32 bore revolver to shoot at Thanekar and Sonekar.
Police said Thanekar had gone to Prasad’s grocery shop to buy a cigarette. Prasad’s wife told him to buy the full packet. Miffed by the suggestion, Thanekar had started arguing with Prasad’s wife.
As the argument escalated, Thanekar had left the place but later returned with his aide Sonekar. They also brought a stick and a sharp weapon with them.
Thanekar and Sonekar had started assaulting Prasad, before his wife intervened. She was also beaten on the head by Sonekar. Prasad too was struck on the head by the sharp weapon by Thanekar.
Prasad had rushed to take out his revolver from the cash box and pointed it at Sonekar and Thanekar, who tried to flee the place. The bullet fired by Prasad struck Thanekar’s shoulder but he fled on foot, leaving behind the bike.
Thanekar is now recuperating at Government Medical College and Hospital, but is learnt to be out of danger.
MIDC police have registered an offence of attempt to murder against Prasad while Sonekar and Thanekar too have been booked for assault. Police have also seized the firearm from Prasad.
