PANAJI: In less than a month, a second security personnel—Suraj Gawade—was arrested while allegedly trying to smuggle narcotics substances suspected to be cocaine inside Colvale Central Jail, on Wednesday, police said.
“The security guard was caught with drugs while he was subjected to regular checking by PI Sushant Joshi,” said SDPO Jivba Dalvi. Immediately, Colvale police station under whose jurisdiction the jail premises falls, was intimated. “The seized cocaine weighed 5g and was to be passed on to one of the under trial prisoners,” Dalvi said.
An offence has been registered against Gawade under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Dalvi said they were able to make the second arrest within a short span of time due to intensified surveillance of the jail staff. Further investigation is being done by PSI Sushant Sangodkar under the guidance of SP North, Shobhit Saxena.
The jail has a four-tier security system with three outer gates being manned by police and IRB personnel. At jail cells, jail guards under the inspector general of prisons are posted.
