Guwahati: From the 14th Dalai Lama to
Bollywood, help is pouring in for the millions of flood-affected people of
Assam.
On Tuesday, the Tibetan spiritual leader wrote a letter to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and expressed concern about the unprecedented rainfall and flooding in Assam that has led to extensive loss of life, devastation of property and displaced millions of people over the last week.
According to Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama stated in his letter that he was making a “donation from the Gaden Phodrang Trust of the Dalai Lama” to support the efforts agencies are making to rescue the affected and provide them with relief and also “as a mark of my solidarity with the people of Assam”.
He wrote, “It is most unfortunate that the monsoon rains in Assam and other parts of India seem to wreak havoc year after year.”
“I would like to express my sadness about the hardship caused to so many people in your state due to the recent floods. I offer my deep condolences to you, to the families who have lost loved ones, and to everyone affected by the flooding,” he added, according to Dharamsala.
Sarma informed in a tweet that Bollywood singer
Sonu Nigam and music producer Bhushan Kumar have donated money to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for the flood-affected people of the state. Sarma also tweeted that actor Arjun Kapoor and director
Rohit Shetty have contributed Rs 5 lakh each to the fund.
