KOLKATA: The Met office has forecast light to moderate rain in Kolkata over the next three days. With the low pressure trough now parked over the north-east Bay of Bengal, the increased rain is also expected to bring down the mercury that will hover around the normal mark or be slightly below normal.
The south-west monsoon arrived in the city and other south Bengal districts on Saturday. Due to the absence of any big system, the rainfall has been scanty over the past few days. Now the low pressure trough is triggering a hope of better rainfall in the coming days.
According to Met office, the system hovered previously over north-eastern states and led to heavy rainfall in the region. “The trough of low pressure has reached the northeastern part of Bay of Bengal and hence we will see increased rainfall activity in Kolkata. While the city is expected to receive light to moderate rain, places in districts like North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas and East Mindapore are like to get heavier downpour,” said Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata director (weather) GK Das.
According to the Met office’s forecast, there will be moderate rain on Wednesday while on Thursday and Friday, there will be light downpour. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 30°C and 32°C during this period, making the weather comfortable. The night temperature will hover around the normal mark of 26°C.
Due to the sluggish start to the monsoon the city already has a rain deficit of about 45% for the month of June. The city has got only about 3cm of rain in the past three days. Due to the delayed monsoon onset and sluggish start the deficit remains around 45% for Kolkata. The evening showers on Tuesday resulted from the formation of thunderstorms cells over Kolkata.
