Active cases drop in both city and state
Active Covid-19 cases in the city and state dropped for the first time on Wednesday after rising steadily since mid-May. While active cases in Maharashtra dropped to 24,639 on Wednesday from 24,915 on Tuesday, in Mumbai, it dropped from 14,146 to 13,501. Also, there was a change in the pattern of registering the week’s highest caseload on Wednesdays. While the state had 3,260 cases on Wednesday, lower than 3,356 on Tuesday, Mumbai had 1,648 detections as against 1,723 on the previous day. Cases in Mumbai have been falling slowly since June 16, but the dropping graph was noticeable in the state only in the last two days. “By July 15, we should have fewer cases,” said Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of the state’s task force on Covid-19. “If the declining trend continues till this weekend, we can say the short sharp wave came and went away in a four-week period like the Omicron wave in January,” he added.
BMC: Drinking water stocks dip below 10%, can last for 38 days
With no heavy rainfall yet over the catchment area lakes that supply potable water to the city, the total water stocks have dropped to below 10% of the required quantum, according to the BMC data. With the municipal body supplying 3,750 million litres of water daily to Mumbaikars, the existing stocks of 1. 43 lakh million litres or 9. 89% in the seven lakes as of Wednesday would suffice for around 38 days. Last June, the total water stocks were over 2 lakh million litres or nearly 15%.
Koshyari and Uddhav +ve, guv in hospital as precaution
On a politically charged day, Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and chief minister Uddhav Thackeray tested positive for Covid-19.Eighty-year-old Koshyari, who announced his diagnosis on Twitter early on Wednesday, is in hospital as a precautionary measure. “I have been tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms. However I have been admitted to a hospital as a precautionary measure,” he tweeted. Meanwhile, Thackeray’s Covid-positive status was announced by the All-India Congress Committee (AICC)’s appointed observer in the state, Kamal Nath. He told reporters that he had been unable to meet Thackeray who had tested positive for the infection.
Maharashtra's case recovery rate is 97.83 per cent. The fatality rate is 1.86 per cent.
The count of recoveries in Maharashtra has jumped to 77,72,491 with the discharge of 3,533 patients, it said.
Currently, Maharashtra is left with 24,639 active cases with Mumbai accounting for the highest number of 13,501 cases in the state, followed by 5,621 patients in the Thane district.
These patients were found coronavirus positive from June 6 to 12, and barring one patient, all others were inoculated. All of them recovered in home isolation.
The state also saw six fresh cases of patients detected with BA.5 sub-variant including five from Pune and one from Nagpur, raising the overall tally of BA.4 and BA.5 cases so far to 25, including 15 in Pune, five in Mumbai, three in Nagpur and two in Thane.
Of the three fresh Covid-19 fatalities, two were reported from Mumbai and one from Raigad.
At 3,260, Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra dip by 399 in 24 hrs; three fatalities
Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 3,260 new Covid-19 cases, including 1,648 in Mumbai, and three fatalities, taking the tally to 79,45,022 and the death toll to 1,47,892, the state health department said. The state reported 399 fewer cases compared to 3,659 infections recorded a day before.
