Bokaro: The district administration on Tuesday gave a one-month deadline to all private schools to put up signboards displaying “tobacco-free educational institution”.
The decision came after a meeting of the district-level tobacco control coordination committee held on Tuesday at the collectorate building.
Deputy development commissioner (DDC) Kirtishree G, who chaired the meeting, said, “I have directed the district education officer, Neelam Aileen Toppo, to make all schools tobacco-free educational institutes within a month and a board should be put up in this regard on school premises”.
During the meeting, the DDC also directed all police stations and their raiding squads to ensure that action is taken against those shopkeepers selling tobacco products within 100 yards of a school.
She further directed the district education officer to convene a meeting of all private schools and direct them to put up the signboards and take action on defaulters.
Meanwhile, the district consultant of the tobacco control programme,
Mohammad Aslam, informed that in the financial year 2021-22, a total of 175 schools in Bokaro have been declared tobacco-free.
