BELAGAVI: City police nabbed a notorious criminal by firing at his left leg when he tried to escape by attacking a police constable. The incident took place at Veerbhadra Nagar in the early hours of Tuesday.
Injured Vishalsingh Vijaysingh Chavan, 26, has been admitted to the district government hospital. The native of Chikkanadi village in Kittur taluk was wanted by police in connection with the murder of realtor Raju Doddabommanavar on March 15.
Miscreatns had allegedly killed Raju by splashing chilli powder in his eyes after intercepting his car at Bhavani Nagar. Later, they also attacked him using sharp weapons. Chavan has been accused of accepting Rs 10 lakh from the second wife of Raju to eliminate him.
Chavan is also wanted by cops in Khade Bazar, Camp, Shahapur and Tilakwadi stations over other cases — six attempt-to-murder, robbery and under the Arms Act. Two cases have also been registered against him in Maharashtra.
Police vigil paid off
Acting on a tip-off, police kept a watch on Dharmanath Bhavan in Ram Nagar and Veerbhadra Nagar in the early hours of Tuesday. According to police intelligence, Chavan was to come near Dharmnath Bhavan to collect the ransom amount. DCP (law and order) Ravindra Gadadi formed a team of five inspectors to arrest him.
“As per the information, the accused came to the spot to collect money on a motorbike. When he realized that he had been surrounded by police, he tried to escape. When he was asked to surrender, he tried to attack a constable. To handle the situation, I fired two rounds of bullet at his knee, and took him to custody,” ACP Narayan Baramani told TOI.
DCP Gadadi said: “We are contemplating recommending the district administration to take action against Chavan under the Goonda Act considering his background.” A case has been registered at Market police station.
