NEW DELHI: BJP-led NDA on Tuesday named Droupadi Murmu as their presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
Droupadi Murmu was the former governor of
Jharkhand. She is likely to file her nomination on June 25. Soon after being named as the NDA's Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu said she was surprised as well as delighted.
"Will request BJD for support in Presidential polls as daughter of the soil," she said.
"For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We announce Droupadi Murmu as NDA's candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections,"
BJP president JP Nadda said.
"BJP parliamentary board discussed 20 names for presidential nominee, it was decided to pick someone from east India, a tribal and woman," he added.
Nadda made the announcement after BJP's parliamentary board meeting at party headquarters in Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed that Murmu has "rich administrative experience" and that she would be a "great President".
"Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation," PM Modi said on Twitter.
"Millions of people, especially those who have experienced poverty and faced hardships, derive great strength from the life of Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her understanding of policy matters and compassionate nature will greatly benefit our country," he added.
Earlier today, the opposition parties announced that they have unanimously decided to field former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as their common candidate for Presidential elections.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, while reading out the joint opposition statement, said that the Modi government made no serious effort to have consensus on Presidential candidate.
June 29 is the last date for candidates to file papers. Voting is scheduled for July 18 and counting on July 21.
