Mangaluru: Karnataka State Safari Karmachari Commission chairman M Shivanna took officials of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and other urban local bodies in Dakshina Kannada to task, for failing to organise a workshop on the government’s various schemes, for pourakarmikas in the city.
Holding a review meet here on Sunday, Shivanna said the commission had issued a direction to hold a workshop to create awareness on Employees’ State Insurance (ESI), Provident Fund (PF), insurance schemes and benefits under the Dr BR Ambedkar Development Corporation, among civic workers working in the MCC and other urban local bodies in the district. However, even after eight months, the workshop has not been organised, he said.
“The commission, which follows a zero-tolerance policy, will take legal steps against officials who fail to follow the guidelines. Workshops have been organised effectively in other districts,” he said, and directed Dakshina Kannada District Urban Development Cell project director Gayathri Nayak to hold a workshop within a month.
He insisted that all civic workers in urban local bodies should be given identity cards. He directed the MCC and other urban local bodies to take initiatives for the construction of restrooms for pourakarmikas in the city. “A proposal to distribute uniforms to pourakarmikas in the state will be finalised after discussions with the government. Children of pourakarmikas who have excelled in SSLC and PU will be honoured by ministers at the district level,” he said.
He warned of legal action against officials, if pourakarmikas are made to enter manholes of underground drains.
