LUCKNOW: Govind Singh, 63, a retired railway employee fond of reading, came across an article about yoga asanas and their benefits after which he tried doing Sarvang asana at home but ended up with severe cervical pain.
Singh is not the only one, there are several such cases where people land in trouble because they perform yoga without expert supervision and taking precautions before, during and after yoga.
Dr. Amarjit Yadav and Dr. Satyendra Kumar Mishra, yoga teachers of Lucknow University said, “It is important to be mentally prepared before performing yoga. One must be free from all sorts of thoughts. Yoga should be done on an empty stomach so that one breathes normally.”
Anjani Kumar Dubey, assistant professor of yoga in UPRTOU, said, “I came across a case where a man who underwent a bone implant tried folding exercise at home after watching videos without putting a cushion under the knee and ended up getting severe pain in his leg. Those doing yoga should always keep time, place, gender and health conditions in mind.”
Prayag Arogyam Kendra founder Prashant Shukla said, “Yoga is an art that can change life. It makes the mind and body healthy.”
