Agnipath stir: Damage to public property will be recovered from protesters, says Varanasi DM

The damage caused to public properties during the violent protest in Varanasi on June 17 will be recovered from the protesters, said DM Kaushal Raj Sharma.

Varanasi District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma, on Monday, June 20, said that the damage caused to public properties during the violent protest over Agnipath recruitment scheme will be recovered from the miscreants.

As many as 36 buses were damaged by miscreants, due to which the government had to suffer a loss of over Rs 12 lakh. While a total of 27 miscreants have been arrested so far, a search operation is on to nab the other rioters as well.

“The arrests have been made in the areas of Sigra and Jaitpura police stations. The police have also nabbed miscreants from Ghazipur, Azamgarh and Mau districts,” said the DM.

The District Magistrate has made a strong appeal to the youth that they should not fall under anyone's delusion and should not indulge in any violent activities as they will be deprived of government jobs in future.

On June 17, a total of 36 buses of UP Transport Corporation Varanasi region and Varanasi City Transport Services Ltd., out of which 21 buses were parked at Cantonment bus station and 15 buses were going to a workshop. These busses were vandalised by a group of 100-150 stone pelters. The UP Transport Corporation Varanasi region and the Varanasi City Transport Services Ltd suffered a loss of over Rs 4 lakh and Rs 8 lakh respectively.

Three FIRs related to the incident have been registered at Sigra police station, two in Jaitpura police station and one in Cantonment police station.
